

We have inhabited the land.
We have crossed and inhabited the oceans.
We have built cities upward, tunnels downward, ships capable of remaining at sea for months and aircraft capable of carrying hundreds of people around the planet in hours.
And now we’re obsessed with space.
Mars. The Moon. Colonies on other planets. Elon is looking to inhabit space via SpaceX. But maybe we’re overlooking a frontier that’s been sitting directly above our heads the entire time.
The sky.
Not simply flying through it.
Inhabiting it.
What if the future of human travel isn’t simply about getting from Point A to Point B faster?
What if we could live, sleep, eat, explore and travel at the same time—while suspended above the Earth?
That is the idea behind:
SKYHAVEN™
HOTEL IN THE SKIES
And strangely enough, the original idea began for me thousands of kilometres from home during an experience with ayahuasca in Peru.
THE VISION IN PERU
In March 2026, while experiencing ayahuasca in Peru, I had an extraordinarily vivid vision involving the future of transportation.
I saw vehicles travelling through the atmosphere.
But they weren’t airplanes as we understand them today.
They appeared to operate using some kind of advanced propulsion system—something that, at least in my vision, allowed large structures to move through the atmosphere while remaining remarkably stable.
I don’t know whether anything resembling that propulsion technology exists today, could someday exist, or was simply the product of an altered state of consciousness.
That’s not really the point.
What stayed with me was the idea the experience produced.
One image in particular remained with me.
I envisioned what amounted to a:
TRAVELLING AIRBORNE MEDICAL FACILITY.
Imagine a major accident, earthquake, wildfire, flood or humanitarian emergency occurring somewhere difficult to reach.
Today, we transport injured people to hospitals.
But what if, under certain circumstances, we could transport the hospital to the people?
Imagine an airborne medical facility capable of travelling hundreds or thousands of kilometres and positioning itself near a disaster zone.
Operating rooms.
Diagnostic equipment.
Medical personnel.
Emergency beds.
Communications.
Food.
Water.
Emergency supplies.
All contained inside a massive mobile platform capable of travelling through the atmosphere.
That thought eventually produced another question.
Why does a flying vehicle have to be merely a vehicle?
And that’s where things became really interesting.
WHY NOT BUILD SOMETHING PEOPLE COULD ACTUALLY LIVE IN?
Imagine checking into a hotel in Vancouver.
Except the hotel doesn’t stay in Vancouver.
That evening you’re having dinner while the Coast Mountains slowly pass beneath you.
You go to sleep in a panoramic suite.
When you wake the next morning, you’re overlooking the Canadian Rockies.
Breakfast above glaciers.
Lunch overlooking turquoise mountain lakes.
Dinner while watching the sunset thousands of feet above the landscape.
There is no airport.
No rental car.
No hotel transfer.
No packing and unpacking every night.
Because your hotel is also your transportation.
The journey becomes the destination.

A CRUISE SHIP FOR THE ATMOSPHERE
Perhaps the easiest way to understand SKYHAVEN isn’t to compare it with an airplane.
Compare it with a cruise ship.
A cruise ship doesn’t simply transport passengers.
It is simultaneously:
a hotel,
a restaurant,
a resort,
an entertainment complex,
an observation platform,
and a transportation system.
The ocean itself becomes part of the experience.
SKYHAVEN would apply essentially the same philosophy to the atmosphere.
Instead of cruising between islands and ports, you’re cruising between mountain ranges, glaciers, coastlines, deserts and cities.
Commercial aviation has spent more than a century trying to make us travel faster.
SKYHAVEN would deliberately do something different.
SLOW DOWN.
Because when the view beneath your hotel is the Earth itself, why would you want to rush?
HOW COULD SOMETHING THIS LARGE POSSIBLY FLY?
This is where the concept becomes an engineering thought experiment rather than simply science fiction.
Trying to keep an enormous hotel airborne entirely through powered thrust would require extraordinary amounts of energy.
So don’t.
Instead, imagine the structure containing enormous internal lighter-than-air cells.
Helium—or potentially another suitable lifting system—could provide a substantial portion of the vehicle’s buoyancy.
In other words, the structure partially floats.
Propulsion then performs a different job.
Rather than carrying the entire weight of the craft continuously, distributed propulsion systems could primarily provide:
movement, steering, stabilization and altitude control.
And this is where another existing technology becomes interesting.
THINK OF A DRONE — THEN THINK MUCH, MUCH BIGGER
Modern drones perform an extraordinary trick that we barely think about anymore.
They remain remarkably stable.
Wind pushes them.
Their payload changes.
They turn.
They climb.
They descend.
Yet onboard computers constantly adjust individual motors to maintain stability.
Now take that principle and imagine it on an entirely different scale.
Instead of four small electric motors keeping a camera drone level, imagine dozens—or eventually hundreds—of independently controlled propulsion units positioned throughout an enormous airborne structure.
One increases thrust.
Another decreases.
Several compensate for crosswinds.
Others control pitch.
Others control yaw.
Others maintain altitude.
A sophisticated flight-control system continually balances the entire platform.
The result wouldn’t necessarily behave like an airplane.
It could behave more like a:
BUILDING SUSPENDED IN THE ATMOSPHERE.
AN AIRSHIP + A DRONE + A CRUISE SHIP
That is really what SKYHAVEN represents.
Not an airplane.
Not a conventional airship.
Not a drone.
Not a cruise ship.
But potentially a combination of ideas from all four.
The enormous internal lifting cells provide buoyancy.
Distributed electric propulsion provides movement and stability.
Advanced flight-control software coordinates the propulsion network.
Lightweight structures reduce mass.
Renewable and low-carbon energy systems could potentially supplement onboard power.
And the enormous interior becomes usable architecture.
Inside could be:
Panoramic guest suites.
Restaurants and lounges.
Observation decks.
Gardens and atriums.
Swimming pools.
Spas and wellness facilities.
Medical facilities.
Entertainment spaces.
Scientific laboratories.
Docking facilities for smaller support vehicles.
Imagine standing inside an enormous central garden beneath a transparent roof while the Rocky Mountains slowly drift underneath you.
That’s the experience.
But there’s an obvious problem.
If SKYHAVEN spends extended periods in the atmosphere, how do you supply it?
And more importantly:
WHAT HAPPENS IN AN EMERGENCY?
That question led directly to the second vehicle in the SKYHAVEN concept.
THE SKYHAVEN SUPPORT VEHICLE
A floating hotel cannot operate safely as an isolated machine.
It needs a lifeline.
So alongside SKYHAVEN I’ve developed the concept of a dedicated:
SKYHAVEN SUPPORT VEHICLE
RESCUE • SUPPLY • MEDICAL • SUPPORT
Its job is fundamentally different from the hotel.
SKYHAVEN is designed around comfort, endurance and slow travel.
The support vehicle is designed around:
speed, capacity, redundancy and utility.
Think of it as a combination of a lifeboat, cargo aircraft, ambulance and shuttle.

THE AIRBORNE LIFEBOAT
Safety has to come first.
If SKYHAVEN eventually carried hundreds of guests and crew, there would need to be a credible way of getting people off the platform during a serious emergency.
The support vehicle therefore becomes SKYHAVEN’s equivalent of a lifeboat.
Except unlike a lifeboat hanging from the side of an ocean liner, this vehicle would be independently powered and capable of flight.
The design objective would be simple:
Carry as many people as safely possible.
Luxury disappears in evacuation mode.
Passenger areas could be converted to high-density emergency seating.
Cargo areas could potentially become additional evacuation spaces when not carrying freight.
Multiple support craft could ultimately accompany or service a larger SKYHAVEN platform so that evacuation capacity isn’t dependent on a single vehicle.
The principle should be:
NO SINGLE POINT OF FAILURE.
THE FLYING SUPPLY TRUCK
The same vehicle could have another everyday purpose.
SKYHAVEN needs food.
Water.
Medical supplies.
Replacement components.
Luggage.
Equipment.
Maintenance personnel.
Fresh produce.
Hotel supplies.
Perhaps even fuel or energy-storage modules depending upon how the eventual propulsion architecture works.
There is no reason SKYHAVEN should have to land every time it needs groceries.
Instead, support vehicles could travel between SKYHAVEN and ground-based logistics centres.
Cargo is loaded on the ground.
The support vehicle climbs to SKYHAVEN.
Computerized flight systems match the speed and movement of the hotel.
The craft docks.
Cargo transfers.
Passengers and crew move between vehicles.
The support craft disconnects and returns to the ground.
It essentially becomes an airborne supply chain.
AND THEN WE COME FULL CIRCLE
This is where the whole idea becomes particularly interesting to me.
Remember where this began.
The original image I experienced in Peru wasn’t a hotel.
It was a mobile medical facility.
So why shouldn’t the SKYHAVEN support craft have a medical configuration as well?
Imagine a modular interior.
One mission carries food.
Another carries passengers.
Another carries replacement equipment.
And during an emergency, modules are replaced with:
Emergency beds.
Medical equipment.
Trauma supplies.
Doctors.
Nurses.
Paramedics.
The support vehicle becomes a flying emergency department capable of reaching SKYHAVEN—or potentially operating independently during terrestrial disasters.
And suddenly we’re back to the idea that started this whole thing.
Take the medical facility to the emergency.
THE ENGINEERING PROBLEMS ARE MASSIVE
Let’s be clear about something.
You cannot take these concept drawings to a fabrication shop tomorrow and start building them.
There are enormous engineering problems that would have to be solved.
Structural mass.
Lift volume.
Wind loading.
Turbulence.
Propulsion efficiency.
Energy storage.
Lightning.
Icing.
Weather avoidance.
Emergency descent.
Fire protection.
Passenger evacuation.
Redundant flight systems.
Helium containment.
Docking two enormous moving airborne vehicles.
Maintenance.
Airspace regulation.
Certification.
And perhaps the most important question:
What happens when several systems fail simultaneously?
Simply scaling up a drone does not solve these problems.
Physics doesn’t scale that conveniently.
But that’s not the most interesting question.
The better question is:
WHAT TECHNOLOGIES WOULD HAVE TO CONVERGE TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE?
MANY OF THE PIECES ALREADY EXIST
Humanity already understands lighter-than-air flight.
We already have electric propulsion.
We already have autonomous flight control.
We already have distributed propulsion.
We already have lightweight composite structures.
We already have hydrogen fuel cells.
We already have solar generation.
We already have sophisticated weather prediction.
We already have computer-controlled stabilization.
We already have automated docking technologies in other transportation systems.
And we already know how to build enormous cruise ships functioning as essentially self-contained floating cities.
None of those technologies individually creates SKYHAVEN.
But technological revolutions often happen when technologies developed independently suddenly become good enough to work together.
The smartphone wasn’t one invention.
The electric vehicle wasn’t one invention.
The modern aircraft wasn’t one invention.
They were systems created through convergence.
Perhaps large-scale atmospheric habitation will eventually happen the same way.
THE HOTEL COULD BE ONLY THE BEGINNING
If humanity eventually develops the engineering capability to create extremely large and stable airborne platforms, hotels may actually be among the least important applications.
Imagine:
Mobile hospitals.
Emergency-response centres.
Scientific laboratories.
Wildfire command platforms.
Search-and-rescue bases.
Communications hubs.
Humanitarian relief centres.
Temporary airborne communities.
Remote research stations.
Perhaps eventually even infrastructure capable of remaining positioned above remote regions for months.
Then we’re no longer talking about a flying hotel.
We’re talking about an entirely new category of human infrastructure.
INHABIT THE AIR
For most of human civilization, we’ve essentially had two places to build.
Land.
And:
Water.
We learned to inhabit the land.
Then we learned to inhabit the oceans with increasingly enormous ships.
Eventually aircraft gave humanity access to the third dimension.
But aircraft merely pass through it.
We never really learned to stay there.
That’s the distinction.
Perhaps that’s the next frontier.
Not Mars.
Not yet anyway.
The frontier immediately above us.
THE ATMOSPHERE.
Maybe someday humanity will stop thinking about the sky merely as empty space separating destinations.
Maybe we’ll begin thinking about it as somewhere we can actually inhabit.
Perhaps the first step isn’t a flying city containing 100,000 people.
Perhaps it begins with something much smaller.
A hundred guests.
A restaurant.
A garden.
A comfortable bed.
A wall of glass.
A support vehicle standing by.
A propulsion system quietly maintaining position.
And the Rocky Mountains slowly passing underneath you.
You aren’t waiting to arrive at your vacation.
You already have.
Because the hotel, the transportation, the view and the destination have become the same thing.
