A New Canadian Concept for the Future of River Fly Fishing

!Columbia River Fly Fishing Boat (Fly Boat for short) concept:

Today, I am publicly documenting a boat concept I have been developing specifically for fly fishing powerful, shallow rivers such as the Columbia River.

The Columbia River Fly Boat™ is envisioned as a futuristic, all-aluminum river boat combining the stability and casting space of a purpose-built fly-fishing platform with the shallow-water performance and manoeuvrability of twin inboard jet propulsion.

The concept began with a simple question:

What would the ideal fly-fishing boat look like if it were designed from the hull up for the Columbia River—not adapted from an ordinary fishing boat?

The Concept

The preliminary design is approximately 19 feet long and 8 feet wide, incorporating:

  • A welded marine-aluminum hull
  • A broad, shallow-draft bottom
  • Twin inboard jet-drive systems
  • Raised forward and rear casting decks
  • Flush deck hardware to reduce fly-line snagging
  • Integrated rod lockers and fly-line management
  • Under-deck storage
  • An electrically operated anchor system
  • Protected fuel and electrical compartments
  • A spacious four-person cockpit
  • A low, angular, futuristic profile
  • A hull and deck arrangement designed specifically for large rivers

The intention is to produce a river boat capable of navigating shallow water while offering the stability, clear casting areas and practical storage required by serious fly anglers.

This remains a preliminary concept and development project. Final hull geometry, structural scantlings, flotation, loading, stability, jet intake placement, electrical systems and construction plans must be reviewed and approved by qualified marine professionals before fabrication or operation.

Origin and Development

The underlying concept and design direction originated with David H. Drover as part of the Black Sheep innovation projects.

The concept has been developed through written specifications, design discussions, preliminary renderings, hull studies and computer-assisted design work. Artificial-intelligence tools have assisted with visualization and preliminary documentation, but the project’s originating idea, requirements, design direction and development decisions were supplied and directed by David H. Drover.

This publication creates a dated public record of the concept and its ongoing development.
