Sometimes the most important lessons in life don’t make sense until years later.
This image isn’t something I found on the internet.
It isn’t something copied from a police textbook.
It is a graphic I created after reflecting on a conversation I had nearly a decade ago with Pastor Aldon Loeppky—a conversation that, at the time, seemed like nothing more than an interesting discussion over coffee. I have called it the Pyramid of Organized Crime in Canada!! See below:
Today, after everything that has happened, I see it very differently.
It Started in 2017
In April 2017, Svetlana Dalla Lana arranged for me to meet Pastor Aldon Loeppky.
I still have the original text message from Pastor Aldon confirming our meeting.
At the time, I believed I was simply meeting a pastor interested in hearing my story.
We talked for hours.
I explained why I believed organized crime, money laundering, financial crime and corruption were becoming Canada’s biggest national security problem.
Then Pastor Aldon said something that has remained with me ever since.
He described organized crime as a pyramid.
His explanation was surprisingly simple.
Police, he explained, are often very successful at arresting the people at the bottom of the pyramid.
The street dealers.
The runners.
The lookouts.
The enforcers.
The expendable people.
But as you move higher…
The investigations become more difficult.
Money replaces violence.
Influence replaces intimidation.
Corporations replace street gangs.
Political connections replace obvious criminality.
Eventually, according to his explanation, investigators reach a level occupied by people with wealth, influence, institutional power and protection—people who are rarely investigated and even more rarely prosecuted.
At the time I thought…
“That’s an interesting way of looking at organized crime. But why is a Pastor tell me this LOL”
I had no idea how important that conversation would eventually become.
Nine Years Later…
After the RCMP Duty to Warn…
After the reported murder plot…
After the Molotov cocktails landed at my family’s front door…
After years of harassment…
After Langley RCMP Investigation No. 2025-39393…
After Inspector Loeppky’s June 29, 2026 letter closing the investigation…
I found myself thinking back to Pastor Aldon’s pyramid.
Only now…
I wasn’t looking at organized crime.
I was looking at institutions.
Maybe We Have Been Looking at the Wrong Pyramid
For years Canadians have been taught to picture organized crime as outlaw motorcycle gangs, drug dealers, cartel members and violent criminals.
Perhaps that’s only the visible part… like the tip of the ice berg!! I redrew the Pyramid as an Iceberg:
The bottom.
The expendable part.
The part that gets arrested.
The part that makes the evening news.
The pyramid Pastor Aldon described suggested something much different.
The higher you climb…
The harder it becomes to see who is really making the decisions.
The harder it becomes to identify who benefits.
The harder it becomes to determine who is protected.
And perhaps the hardest question of all…
Who decides where investigations stop?
The Bottom of the Pyramid
When I designed this illustration, I deliberately placed police arrests at the base.
Not because policing isn’t important.
Quite the opposite.
Most police officers spend their careers investigating people at the bottom because those are the investigations placed before them.
Street-level offenders.
Drug dealers.
Lookouts.
Violent offenders.
Those investigations matter.
But they are also the easiest to prove.
The people at the bottom often have the least power.
The fewest resources.
The fewest connections.
They are replaceable.
If one disappears…
Another takes their place tomorrow.
The Top of the Pyramid
The top is different.
There the violence is often replaced by influence.
Money.
Institutions.
Professional advisers.
Political relationships.
Layers of separation.
People who rarely appear in police photographs.
People who rarely stand in front of television cameras wearing handcuffs.
Whether that description accurately reflects reality is something readers can decide for themselves.
What struck me is that this was the model Pastor Aldon chose to explain organized crime nearly ten years ago.
The Graphic
That conversation remained in the back of my mind for years.
After everything that has happened since, I finally decided to put his explanation into a single illustration.
The result is the graphic accompanying this article.
It represents my interpretation of the analogy Pastor Aldon shared with me in 2017.
It also represents something else.
Years of watching investigations.
Years of watching institutions.
Years of asking questions.
Years of observing who seems to face accountability…
…and who never does.
Follow the Money. Follow the Power. Follow the Protection.
People often say:
“Follow the money.”
I would add two more things.
Follow the power.
Follow the protection.
Because if Pastor Aldon was right…
The higher you climb the pyramid…
The harder the truth becomes to reach.
