Here’s one worth paying attention to.

The RCMP has arrested two Air Canada employees working in ground operations at Montréal–Trudeau International Airport as part of an investigation into an alleged international drug-trafficking operation.

According to police, the investigation began after authorities intercepted 62.5 kilograms of cocaine hidden in backpacks arriving on a flight from Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Investigators subsequently seized another 56 kilograms of cannabis.

But here’s the part that caught the Black Sheep’s attention:

Police allege the employees used their legitimate positions and access to secure areas of the airport to help move luggage associated with the trafficking operation — facilitating the alleged importation of cocaine into Canada and exportation of cannabis.

According to reporting on the investigation, the alleged method included switching baggage tags so luggage containing drugs could be redirected through the airport system.

The RCMP executed search warrants at two residences, a vehicle and the employees’ Air Canada work base in Dorval. Air Canada says the two employees have been suspended and that it is cooperating with investigators. Police have also said the evidence could potentially lead to additional arrests and charges.

That last part matters.

This isn’t simply a story about drugs getting through an airport. It is an alleged insider-access operation — people entrusted with access to restricted infrastructure allegedly using that access for precisely the opposite reason it was granted.

And once again it raises the bigger question:

How much organized crime succeeds not by breaking through the front door — but because somebody already has the key?

The allegations have not been proven in court, and the investigation remains ongoing.
