A Father’s Day I Never Expected

Today, my daughter and I are grateful to be alive.
On January 22, 2026, our home in Castlegar was firebombed while we were inside. Multiple incendiary devices were thrown at our house in what police later described as a targeted attack. By sheer luck, determination, and perhaps something greater watching over us, we survived.
Nearly five months later, I still do not know who was responsible.
I still do not know why it happened.
What makes that reality even more difficult to accept is knowing that warnings had been provided beforehand and concerns had been raised, yet no protection was put in place for my family.
💔 It has been one of the hardest years of my life.
The events surrounding the firebombing changed everything. Relationships changed. Circumstances changed. The sense of safety that every father hopes to provide for his children was shattered in an instant.
Yet despite everything that has happened over the past decade, I refuse to allow bitterness to define this day.
So today I want to wish all fathers a Happy Father’s Day.
That includes the fathers serving in law enforcement and the RCMP.
👨👧 Family matters.
❤️ Children matter.
🙏 Life is precious.
Father’s Day is a reminder that our time with the people we love is never guaranteed. We often assume there will be another day, another conversation, another opportunity to tell someone what they mean to us.
Sometimes there isn’t.
For me, this is not a day of celebration so much as a day of gratitude.
Gratitude that my daughter is still here.
Gratitude that I am still here.
Gratitude for every sunrise, every conversation, every hug, and every moment that many people take for granted.
Today, that is enough.
Happy Father’s Day.
