Black Sheep

September 3 2026

There is a strange, gritty and powerful story buried in the Book of Judges.

It is the story of Ehud.

Israel had fallen under the domination of King Eglon of Moab, and for eighteen years the Israelites served him.

Then Israel cried out to the LORD.

And God raised up a deliverer.

His name was Ehud.

And here is the detail I love:

Ehud was left-handed.

Now, you will sometimes hear versions of this story suggesting that Ehud was mocked, laughed at or considered defective because he was left-handed. That makes for a great sermon—but the biblical text doesn’t actually say that.

Judges 3:15 simply makes a point of telling us that Ehud was a left-handed Benjamite.

Why mention it?

Because his left-handedness becomes crucial to what happens next.

And there is a delicious irony here.

The unlikely characteristic.

The unusual characteristic.

The characteristic that made Ehud different from what people normally expected…

became part of his advantage.

As somebody who happens to be left-handed myself…

Wink, wink. 😉

THE THING THAT MADE HIM DIFFERENT

Ehud prepared a short, double-edged sword and strapped it underneath his clothing against his right thigh.

Think about that.

A conventional right-handed warrior would normally reach across toward the opposite side.

Ehud did the reverse.

He eventually gained a private audience with King Eglon by telling him he had a secret message.

The king dismissed those around him.

Ehud approached.

Then the left-handed man reached with his left hand, drew the weapon from his right thigh, and killed Eglon.

It is an extraordinarily violent account from an extraordinarily violent period of ancient history, and it should be understood in that historical and biblical context.

I’m certainly not advocating anybody start carrying swords around in 2026.

Quite the opposite.

Because the part of Ehud’s story that matters to me today isn’t killing a king.

It is defeating corrupt and oppressive power.

And our weapons today are different.

WE ALREADY HAVE WHAT WE NEED

Maybe that’s one of the great lessons buried inside this strange story.

We spend enormous amounts of our lives thinking we need to become somebody else before we can accomplish whatever we’re supposed to accomplish.

More money.

More influence.

More credentials.

More powerful friends.

More approval.

More people telling us we’re right.

But perhaps sometimes we already have what we need.

Ehud didn’t need to become right-handed.

He needed to use his left hand.

That hits home for me.

Because I’m left-handed too but of course that’s just all a coincidence 😉

And perhaps the things that have made me the Black Sheep—the things that have sometimes put me outside the comfortable circle—are precisely the things I need for this season.

My weapon isn’t Ehud’s sword.

It is evidence.

Documents.

Emails.

Text messages.

Audio.

Court records.

Access-to-information requests.

Chronologies.

Research.

And questions that don’t disappear simply because somebody powerful doesn’t want to answer them.

TAKING DOWN CORRUPT KINGS

Let’s be very clear what I mean by that.

I’m not talking about physically hurting anybody.

I’m talking about taking down corruption.

The modern corrupt king doesn’t necessarily wear a crown.

It might be an official abusing authority.

It might be a bureaucracy protecting itself.

It might be an institution refusing to acknowledge inconvenient evidence.

It might be a network of people who depend upon nobody looking too closely.

Or perhaps the “king” isn’t a person at all.

Perhaps it is a corrupt system. A corrupt judiciary such as the BC Supreme Court and Justice Branch and Justice Barbara Young and the Court of Kings Bench such as the extremely corrupted now fired former Ass Chief Justice of Alberta John Rooke.  Corrupt RCMP such as Staff Sgt Monty Taylor at the Castlegar RCMP and CPL Amanda Martel at the Langley Serious crimes along with he boss Inspector Loeppky and other staff Sgt at Castlegar who Taylor was brought in by the RCMP to protect and cover for such as Staff Sgt Laurel Mathew and Staff Sgt Brett Turner who I believe is not longer an RCMP at all actually and Staff Sgt Darren Oleke who they simple retired to cover this up!?  Just to name a few as there’s about a dozen more like CPL Lloyd Schoepp with the Calgary RCMP and other law enforcement in Calgary like the former chief of the Calgary Police Roger Chaffin like I said I can go on and on and on with the corruption my family has experienced at the hands of the cops and the courts in Alberta and BC for rhe last 12 years!!

And in a democracy, you don’t defeat that king with a sword.

You defeat it with evidence.

You expose it.

You document it.

You challenge it in court.

You put it before oversight agencies.

You put legitimate questions before journalists.

You obtain the records.

You follow the evidence wherever it leads—even when it contradicts what you originally believed.

And when wrongdoing can actually be proved, you demand lawful accountability.

PERHAPS THIS IS MY SEASON

I don’t know how my own story ends.

None of us does.

But I increasingly wonder whether every season of our lives equips us for another one.

Things we thought were disadvantages become tools.

Experiences we never wanted become knowledge.

Battles we wished we’d never fought teach us endurance.

Being outside the herd teaches us to see the herd differently.

And perhaps being underestimated isn’t always such a terrible thing.

Ehud’s left hand looked like an incidental detail.

It wasn’t.

It became central to his story.

And perhaps some of the things that make each of us different are the same.

So maybe the question isn’t:

“Why wasn’t I made like everybody else?”

Maybe the question is:

“What has already been put into my hand for this season?”

For me, the answer seems increasingly straightforward.

Keep investigating.

Keep documenting.

Keep questioning.

Keep publishing responsibly.

Keep testing allegations against evidence.

Keep correcting myself when the evidence demands it.

Keep demanding accountability.

And never confuse vengeance with justice.

Because if there really are corrupt kings at the end of this road, I don’t want their blood.

I want the truth about them.

I want evidence examined.

I want facts established.

I want corruption exposed.

And where wrongdoing is proven, I want lawful accountability.

Ehud carried a sword.

The Black Sheep carries receipts.

And wouldn’t you know it…

we’re both left-handed. 😉

🐑 BLACK SHEEP WHISTLEBLOWER

Maybe the thing that makes you different isn’t your weakness.

Maybe it’s exactly what you were given for the season you’re in.
