Well, WTF?!
Just three days ago, Kerry-Lynne Findlay stood before the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention and declared:
“I’m not going anywhere.”
Today, September 20, 2026, she resigned as leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, effective immediately.
You seriously couldn’t script B.C. politics right now.
Findlay only won the leadership on May 30, 2026. Less than four months later, she’s gone.
And you know, thinking back over my years watching politics and business, whenever I hear a politician or CEO emphatically announce “I’m not resigning” or “I’m not going anywhere,” I almost immediately start wondering how long it will be before the resignation announcement arrives.
It has almost become the political and corporate kiss of death. LOL.
Once somebody has to publicly announce they’re definitely not resigning, resignation has obviously become enough of a question that they feel compelled to answer it.
In Findlay’s case, we didn’t have to wait long.
Three days.
From “I’m not going anywhere” to “I resign.”
What the Hell Happened?
This didn’t happen in a vacuum.
The B.C. Conservative caucus has been experiencing serious internal turmoil, with MLAs leaving or being removed amid disputes over Findlay’s leadership and the direction of the party.
Then everything accelerated.
On September 18, Findlay announced that John Rustad, Trevor Halford and Claire Rattée were being removed from the Conservative caucus, saying there was “no room for internal power struggles or vanity projects.”
Then today, former Surrey mayor and MLA Linda Hepner quit the caucus.
Hours later?
Findlay resigned.
In announcing her departure, Findlay said she would not allow an internal battle over her leadership to become a continuing distraction and acknowledged that, with hindsight, there were decisions she would reconsider.
Whatever happened behind closed doors, that is one hell of a turnaround from “I’m not going anywhere” three days earlier.
And an Election Could Be Coming
The timing makes the turmoil even more consequential.
There has been continuing speculation about the possibility of Premier David Eby calling an early provincial election, although no snap election had been formally announced as of this writing.
So British Columbia potentially has the governing NDP considering its political options while the Official Opposition has been dealing with caucus departures, expulsions and now the resignation of its leader.
Findlay, meanwhile, says she still intends to run as the Conservative candidate in the Abbotsford-Mission byelection.
WTF Is Going On in B.C. Politics?
Whatever your politics, this has been an extraordinary sequence of events.
May 30: Findlay wins the leadership.
September 17: “I’m not going anywhere.”
September 18: Rustad, Halford and Rattée are removed.
September 20: Hepner leaves.
Hours later: Findlay resigns.
Political whiplash doesn’t begin to describe it.
And it leaves one very obvious question that journalists and British Columbians should be asking:
What happened behind the scenes during those three days?
Because apparently in politics, when somebody tells you they’re “not going anywhere”…
you might want to check back on Monday.
WTF?! She resigned.
